It&#8217;s the middle of the year, and sometime after June 18, the team was invited to do a short panel on Graphic Designing in Print along with our community: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/graphicartistsphilippines\/\">Graphic Artists of the Philippines<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember56\">It&#8217;s a topic that is very close to my heart. Print made me realize the reality that I need math even in Graphic Design :p<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember57\">The day actually started very early for me. Waking up at 6 AM, I couldn&#8217;t fall back to sleep, so I was doing random things at home before taking a bath and preparing to travel to SM Mall of Asia where the event would be held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember58\">Afterwards, at around 11, we started traveling with a few stopovers along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember59\">By 2:30 PM, we had arrived at the venue, and it was great to meet everyone. By then, time had flown by so fast! There were a lot of great topics, and the talk by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/philippine-ai-business-association-paiba\/\">Philippine AI Business Association (PAIBA)<\/a> actually caught my attention too, with a very detailed discussion on AI workflows, automation, and prompt engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember60\">Then came our time to shine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember61\">We, admins and moderators of Graphic Artists of the Philippines, shared our thoughts and insights on various questions. It was a 20-minute panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember62\">Sir Ronan then asked the first question for Mr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/roqcleo\/\">Roq Cleo<\/a> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember64\">As a branding strategist and design thinking facilitator, how can Filipino creatives use design thinking to solve real business challenges beyond aesthetics and visual appeal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember65\">He answered by defining: What is Design Thinking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember66\">Design Thinking is a process on how to solve any big problems, any problems, small or big. You can solve that. He believes that business owners should connect the business to solving the needs of their customers. Businesses should solve a problem and be a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember67\">He also emphasized empathy. You need empathy to understand behavior, to put yourself in the shoes of your target market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember68\">Then the next panel speaker asked Mr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bkpena\/\">Bernard Kenneth Pe\u00f1a<\/a> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember70\">In an era dominated by digital content, what unique value does printed illustration and visual storytelling still offer audiences? How can Filipino artists preserve and communicate this through innovative experiences?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember71\">Berns, who is Bernard Kenneth Pe\u00f1a, is a graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas with a degree in Fine Arts. He began drawing in preschool, where he imagined elves living on stilts. He answered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember72\">There is a lot of value in things that connect with fans, especially in printed illustrations. There are rare merchandise items that are really valuable, especially if they&#8217;re personalized and feel like they were made for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember73\">Comics are an innovative experience because they can capture the time and culture of when they were made. He tied his answer with Roq&#8217;s and emphasized the value of comics being able to connect to the audience through many factors, including culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember74\">The next question was for me, Jemmarie Bocalbos, a Creative Strategy and Marketing Leadership professional with over 14 years of experience across design, marketing, and production. The question was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember75\">As AI and automation continue to reshape creative work, how can designers leverage these technologies while maintaining originality, critical thinking, and human creativity? And what advice would you give to young creatives who want to remain competitive and employable in an increasingly AI-driven design industry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember76\">My answer was that we can leverage AI as creatives and collaborate with AI to solve the needs of our audience. As humans, we know the needs and culture of our audience. AI doesn&#8217;t have these, these are advantages we have as humans: the ability to empathize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember77\">People also have an inherent appreciation for personalization and connection, which I believe is an advantage in today&#8217;s era that both print and humanity have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember78\">So, my advice to the younger generation is for them to take advantage of their humanity, their ability to understand culture, context, and the needs of their fellow humans, and to continue learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember79\">The next question was for Carlos Pineda, Designer and Creative Director of Guhit at Gawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember80\">Carlos is one of the creative directors of Guhit at Gawa Studios, a print and design studio creating for the local food &amp; beverage industry. Their company\u2019s focus on delivering good design hand-in-hand with thoughtful execution by providing food photography, branding, and print production helps them stand out from other design studios in the metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember81\">The question was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember82\">Through Guhit at Gawa Studios, you combine branding, photography, and print production. How important is collaboration across creative disciplines in delivering successful campaigns and products? What entrepreneurial lessons have been most valuable in building and growing a creative studio in today&#8217;s competitive market?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember83\">He answered that collaboration is key, especially in the world of Graphic Design. It&#8217;s an industry that&#8217;s highly interconnected with other industries. Even if one person feels that they can do everything by themselves, they still need to collaborate and work with other people. People cannot scale up alone, collaboration is highly needed for scaling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember84\">His tip to entrepreneurs is to find their niche. Choose a market and focus on that market&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember85\">Then Sir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ronan-espinueva-052b8a3b\/\">Ronan Espinueva<\/a> posed a technical question that&#8217;s very important in a convention like Printcon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember87\">What should every aspiring graphic designer know about pre-press workflows? How important is understanding CMYK color management in achieving consistent print results?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember88\">I took on this question and answered that one of the most important skills that a print designer should have is Mathematics. Print involves knowing accurate sizing, converting values such as meters to centimeters, which involves Math. Sometimes, something as simple as making a mistake with sizing has big consequences, such as losses in salary and profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember89\">Then there is the part that print often involves teams and collaborating with other people. It is important to have organized and shareable working files\u2014through naming your layers, naming your working files so they&#8217;re easily identifiable, and proper file management through packaging files and ensuring assets can be turned over to the next team that needs them so that the output can be created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember90\">In terms of CMYK and RGB, I emphasized that these two color modes are seen differently depending on where we are in the artwork: screen vs. the physical world. &#8220;The human eye&#8221; vs. &#8220;the computer eye.&#8221; Nowadays, there are many types of printers, and even printers that can consistently print from an RGB color mode. But during my print experience, most of our suppliers were using CMYK, so it was very important that we knew how to convert colors to avoid pale or &#8220;muddy&#8221; looking outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember91\">CMYK and RGB can be differentiated in terms of ink colors: CMYK is Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black), while RGB is Red, Green, and Blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember92\">Then the next question for all the panelists was: How can Filipino designers compete and collaborate on a global stage?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember93\">Roq Cleo answered this by talking about ensuring high-quality work. For Filipinos to stay globally competitive, we can also leverage our culture. He shared about his vocation of supporting Indigenous communities and how, through introspection in their designs, all elements have a reason and are part of a greater storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember94\">As Filipinos, we must find our identities and what makes us unique, and be brave enough to integrate that into the artworks that we create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember95\">The panel was closed by our host and moderator, Sir Ronan, who encouraged us to immerse ourselves in Filipino culture and always tell the story of the Filipino. He reminded us that when we are solving a problem, we can approach it through the unique perspective of being Filipino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember96\">TL;DR:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Print design goes beyond visuals; it requires math, precision, and collaboration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI is a tool, but human empathy, culture, and context remain our biggest advantage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personalization and connection make print and creative work more valuable today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaboration and finding your niche are key to growth in the creative industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filipino designers can compete globally by embracing identity, culture, and storytelling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember98\">Takeaway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember99\">AI can assist the process, but it cannot replace perspective, empathy, and lived experience. In an increasingly automated world, the true advantage of a designer is not just skill, but humanity.
