Mastering the Art of Self Promotion: A Recap with Wacom Technology Corp. and the Filipino Creative Community
We had an amazing time attending the “Mastering the Art of Self Promotion” event with Wacom Philippines, Graphic Artists of the Philippines, and Philippine Graphic Artists. It was an intimate gathering filled with valuable insights, hands-on learning, and community bonding—exactly what you need to sharpen your creative game!
The day began with a lively registration, setting the tone for networking as creatives mingled over coffee. Kristel Puno did the honors of introducing the event, and we were surprised (and excited) to see that most attendees were students. It was inspiring to see so many eager minds ready to shape the future of the creative industry.
We were privileged to have Sir Rene B. Misa as our subject matter expert, alongside community leaders like Aiza King, Cap Hernandez, Lad Gutierrez, and Shai Gili. They shared insightful tips on building a strong digital footprint, harnessing the power of networking, and the magic that referrals can create.
The event took a deep dive into what self-promotion really means—defining your unique selling point, identifying your target audience, and honing foundational skills. Our speakers also emphasized the balance between self-promotion and skill-building. You need grit and resilience to stand out in this industry, but hard work truly pays off.
One standout takeaway? Your work doesn’t have to be perfect when you start sharing it. In fact, promoting yourself early allows you to document your progress and build connections with those who appreciate your craft.
Our community leaders emphasized the importance of digital presence. Whether you’re sharing your work on Facebook groups like GAP and PGA or exploring organizations like the Multimedia Arts Association of the Philippines – MIMAROPA, putting yourself out there is essential. Sir Rene B. Misa encouraged us to embrace the power of doing great work that speaks for itself and to always be open to referrals.
In today’s fast-paced world, adaptability and flexibility are key. Whether you’re using Adobe, Canva, or Autodesk, it’s all about choosing the right tool for the task at hand.
During Sir Adriel Chan’s session he shared, his insight about technology and innovation and had an insightful discussion about choosing the right tools for the right tasks. It was during this session that a great student insight was heard: “It’s not about versus, versus. It’s about convenience.”
With the Philippines continuing to grow as a global creative hub, we discussed the various career tracks available to creatives—whether you’re choosing traditional employment, freelancing, or striking a balance between the two.
As a mixed-income earner myself, I shared insights on balancing full-time work with freelance gigs. You don’t need to limit yourself to one path! It’s all about producing quality work for both, maintaining balance, and focusing on continuous learning.
The event ended on a high note with Social Bingo! It was a chance for small-group mentorship, deeper conversations, and networking. We awarded prizes to the top five Bingo winners and enjoyed an exciting raffle from our sponsors.
A huge thank you to Wiltlover Cafe for providing an awesome space with delicious food and drinks. Everyone went home happy—and with loot bags in hand!
If you’re a Multimedia Arts student or creative professional, don’t forget—there’s a huge demand for your skills in the Philippines and beyond! I’m always open to help with CV and resume advice. Having led a session with DICT Oriental Mindoro last June 2024, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to optimize your cover letters, portfolio and CV to stand out. Feel free to reach out!
