About Intramuros

Intramuros is known as the oldest district of the present day Manila. It houses several historical places and it’s a historical place in itself. Intramuros was a walled city built by the Spaniards to protect it from invasion. It’s name “Intramuros” directly translates as “Within the Walls”. Because of its military served purpose Intramuros was where the Military forces for all the colonizers of the Philippines. Intramuros is base where the Spanish, Americans and Japanese centralized their power.

Just like in the Spanish Colonial period, Intramuros still houses some of the higher education institutions in the Philippines. These are the city-owned Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, the technical college Mapúa Institute of Technology, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and high schools such as the Manila High School, and Colegio de Santa Rosa.

Sadly, in an October 2010 report titled Saving Our Vanishing Heritage, the Global Heritage Fund identified Intramuros (along with Fort Santiago) as one of 12 worldwide sites most "On the Verge" of irreparable loss and destruction, citing insufficient management and development pressures.
